Last week we hit the mall for....actually I don't remember why we hit the mall, but I know we got some Chinese food out of the deal. For the record, mall food used to be so, so much better. When I was a kid, we had a Chick-Fil-A in the food court at the local mall. I LOVE Chick-Fil-A. Like more than Oreo Blizzards love it. A. LOT. Its at least two hours in any direction to find one today, so the fact that there was one in the mall when I was a little girl is nothing short of awesome. I am not kidding when I tell you I still have the Chick-Fil-A Christmas ornament that came with a kids' meal I got back in 1988. And I still hang it up on our Christmas tree. And that is how much I love Chick-Fil-A. Eat mo' chikin.
If you haven't had Chick-Fil-A, you need to Google maps that puppy and take a road trip. You need to order yourself the 12 piece chicken nugget meal with waffle fries and an Oreo milkshake. Your culinary fast food experience will never be the same.
All of that to say, we went to the mall, and there was no Chick-Fil-A, so we had Chinese food. The food court at this mall has a merry-go-round plopped right in the center, which is what I consider the crown jewel of the mall. Food and fun all in one place. What's not to love?
Up until last week, Newbie was never old enough to get his kicks and giggles out of the merry-go-round, so I had to shop and eat my Chinese food without the thrill of a carnival ride for dessert.
NO MORE, my friends. No more.
As soon as we sat down at the table to eat, he was all over that merry-go-round like stank on a zoo. He was strapped into his stroller, but he was pointing and yelling and signing "please" like nobody's business. And let me tell you something: I was excited. Because I have always wanted to have a kid begging to go on the merry-go-round at the mall, and the hour was finally upon me. The Hubs emptied his pockets and found a dollar to exchange for the special gold token that gets you inside the gates, and then me and Newbie were off.
I'm ashamed to say my son's first merry-go-round experience involved a relatively freakish looking jackrabbit. As a kid, choosing your merry-go-round steed of choice was a BIG deal. And now, here I was, plopping my son down on a lamesauce jackrabbit. But I was frazzled with excitement, and Newbie didn't really seem to care at first, so we opted for the rabbit that was within good photo-opp range as opposed to the rockadellic horses on the interior of the ride.
I strapped a long leather belt around Newbie that could have wrapped around his body 50 times and tried not to think about why a leather belt on a food court merry-go-round might look rusty or feel sticky. Gross, man. Just gross.
That's when Newbie got a little peeved that he wasn't riding a horse. I think it was while I was looping that nasty leather belt around his waist that he noticed he was not on a horse, but rather, a distant cousin of the famed Peter Cottontail. Big kids hopped up onto the pretty horses around us, and Newbie watched while he sat strapped down to a jackrabbit. It was not a proud moment for me. Having been raised a Texan, I should have known better than to make my little man ride on a rabbit when he could have been rockin' it out on a horse. Next time I'm going to do him a solid and find us a warrior-like steed to sit upon.
At least we weren't on the frog in the background, because LAME.
Newbie kept pointing to all the horses around us until the merry-go-round started, and then he forgot all about his less-than-stellar riding companion and ATE IT UP. He looked around with big round eyes and waved to everybody and their Build-A-Bear from his place atop the jack rabbit. He was a BIG fan, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a momma milestone for me because I have this fabulous picture of my mom holding me on a merry-go-round in Somewhere, Texas, and I was super excited to be doing the same thing with my little guy. We had such fun, waving to Daddy each time we went around and smiling while he caught it on video with his phone.
Yes, good times were had by all at the food court.
And that's not something you can say every day given that the food court is missing a Chick-Fil-A.
Happy Saturday, and hope y'all have a wonderful weekend...and possibly some killer waffle fries. =)

The day the stromboli sassed me
This morning Newbie had a quick appointment at the doctor to get a booster shot. The Hubs and I came up with this brilliant idea to give him the complementary lollipop before and during the appointment, as opposed to the usual end of the appointment, in the hopes that the artificial grape flavor would distract Newbie and keep the tears at bay.

It was not as brilliant as it sounds. Moments after this picture was taken, the nurses walked in, poked him, and the flood gates opened. He was fine as soon as I scooped him up off the table, but the bottom line: lollipops don't cut it, Sugar. Shots are still the stink.
Also, we ran into my OB in the office waiting room. I probably don't need to tell you that there are about 87 reasons why that was awkward. It was a lot like seeing your teacher at the grocery store. What is she doing here? Doesn't she live at school? It just. shouldn't. happen. The end.
After the appointment, we went to the gardens just long enough for Newbie to get soaked by the fountains then zipped over to Jimmy John's for some freaky fast subs before the Hubs hit the road for work. Newbie loves his daddy and has been such a ham lately. I'm not really sure what he's doing in this picture, but you can bet he's yucking it up for his daddy-O.
This afternoon I cleaned the house, (I have a thing for clean houses going into the weekend) and let me tell you something: cleaning the house with a toddler in tow in not easy. It is a full fledged workout and then some. Which means its totally OK that I threw an extra handful of sugar into the watermelon granitas I made tonight.
After cleaning the house, I was a shadow of the woman I once was. In an attempt to make dinner easy, I pulled up a Stromboli recipe I found online a couple weeks ago and decided to give it a whirl. The recipe was advertised as "quick and easy", so I figured it was a shoo-in. Shoe-in. Shew-in. Shhhooooo-in.
As I'm working my way through the first steps of the recipe, I'm seriously beginning to question both the "quick" and the "easy". I was exhausted and the steps seemed a bit labor intensive. All I wanted was something fast for dinner. I coulda just made mac and cheese, for crying out loud, but I chose this path instead because I thought I could trust the cook behind the recipe when I read "quick and easy".
Ya think ya know a guy.
You can imagine my irritation when I looked to the recipe and read: "Now, this kind of dough can be tough to pull apart, so just be patient."
That's when I lost it and started talking back to the recipe card.
"DON'T YOU SASS ME! Don't you know I just cleaned the entire house?!?! Who says you are quick and easy?!?! I AM ABOUT TO GO KUNG FU ON YOUR STROMBOLI HINEY!"
And then I did. I went kung fu on that sucker and threw it in the oven and choked it down in all its "quick and easy" glory and then I vowed to never ever make it again because what kind of recipe throws that kind of sass at a momma who is just trying to find a viable substitute for mac and cheese?
And you know who else wasn't a big fan of said "quick and easy" Stromboli?
This guy:
That is one very unhappy camper, folks.
From now on, we're stickin' to mac and cheese. And yes, I will be fishing green beans and Stromboli out of Newbie's nose tonight at bathtime. Do not let anyone tell you raising a toddler is anything but glamorous.
Wishing you all a happy Thursday free of recipe drama. =)

Eden's Story
One month ago, I went in to the emergency room with symptoms that led to an emergency ultra sound. My husband, my mom, and I watched as an ultra sound technician showed me pictures of my sweet baby. We saw our baby's profile- the little nose and eyes and mouth. I smiled. My baby was beautiful. We saw tiny arms and legs, an itsy bitsy back curled up, peacefully resting in my womb. But there was no movement, and I knew my baby wasn't there anymore. I drank in the little body resting on the screen, memorizing every feature because I knew. I knew it was the last time I would see my little one resting inside me. There was no heartbeat, no tiny, fluttering white image standing out against the rest and pounding away on the screen. My husband and I cried. My mom cried. We all cried.
Could all that is lost ever be found
Could a garden come up from this ground at all...
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things out of us
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things out of us
You make me new, You are making me new
You make me new, You are making me new
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
*"Beautiful Things" by Gungor
All this pain
I wonder if I’ll ever find my way
I wonder if I’ll ever find my way
After seeing my baby's ultrasound, the ER doctor came in and told me this was the end; God told me it was only the beginning.
I wonder if my life could really change at all...At home, I wept. My body ached with the pain. The spirit groaned. There aren't words to describe the pain when your heart is ripped raw, bleeding out. My fists tightened and wanted beat the ground; my heart wailed. The hurt ran so deep. I would never hold my baby, tickle tiny toes, nibble teeny ears. I held my son, and I cried for the baby I had lost. I begged to see Jesus in my pain. I begged Him to be with us- to stay close. I asked Him to take care of my baby, the one I wouldn't get to hold.
All this earthCould all that is lost ever be found
Could a garden come up from this ground at all...
In that moment, the Lord came to me and gave me a vision. I saw my baby in Heaven. I saw my baby's beginning, and it was astounding.
You make beautiful things You make beautiful things out of the dust
I grappled to hold on to the hurt because I knew what I had lost, but the sorrow slipped from my fingers like sand as I gazed at what was unfolding in Heaven. I saw my baby, and my darling was so, so happy and so loved and so cared for. My weeping heart was filled to overflowing with hope. I saw the beginning of my little one's story, and it could not have been more magnificent: my child was holding the very hand of Jesus and filled with bubbling joy.
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us
You make beautiful things out of us
God's heart had reached down and pulled me out of the pit. I missed my baby so very, very much, but I knew His plan was perfect, and I was blessed, because He showed me it was so.
All around
Hope is springing up from this old ground
Hope is springing up from this old ground
When my husband got home that evening, I shared with him the vision God had given me of our baby's beginning. Through tears, my husband shared his part of the story, the part where he had seen the light of angels taking our baby to Heaven. We smiled through tears at God's majesty, His faithfulness, goodness, and grace. Where there was unspeakable loss, abundant life had been found.
Out of chaos life is being found in You
As Jesus ministered to us, He told me to write. He told me my baby's story was never meant for only me to see; I had to share it. And so, I wrote. I wrote about my journey from the dust of despair to the joyful place of hope in Christ. I wrote about the beautiful things God had done.
And several wrote back.
Using the story He asked me to share, God was doing some incredible things in the hearts of many.
Beautiful things, in fact.
You make beautiful things
"I LOVED what you shared, and I smiled the whole way through. It blessed me beyond words, and I believe that the Lord chooses these things to share with people."
You make beautiful things out of the dust"Thank you so much for writing your post. For the past 3 years I have grieved over the 10 fingers and 10 toes I would never be able to count and kiss, but reading about your vision brought my heart an unexplainable amount of comfort."
You make beautiful things"So random seeming... but so designed by God. Your vision and picture of Heaven was very comforting. My babies would be about 10 and 9 if they were here on earth. But God wanted them with Him."
You make beautiful things out of us
"I am so completely in awe."
You make beautiful things
"I am so blessed by that. Words cannot describe. Share it, scream it from the rooftops because we so desperately need to hear it and to know of the hope we have."
"I've been down the miscarriage road now 3 times after having a healthy little boy 2 years ago....Your words have touched me and I am thankful to have "stumbled" upon your blog--even though I really know that that was all in God's plan too!"
You make beautiful thingsYou make beautiful things out of us
I wept. He came.
I prayed. He answered.
I wrote. He worked.
You wrote. I smiled.
He took me, a broken, raw, weeping mess, and He drew near and blessed me. He showed me how He was using my baby's story, and through His grace and the hope He offers in Jesus, He made me new.
You make me new, You are making me new
You make me new, You are making me new
Through the words God placed on my pen, through the hope He offered in those words, through His grace and the hope He offers in Jesus, He made us new.
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
For those of you who have walked this road with us, for those who have prayed, for those who have encouraged, for those who have mourned with us, for those who have been touched by my little one's story, thank you for being a part of the beautiful things God is doing with our sweet baby's life and resurrection. Friends, you are one of those beautiful things.
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us
You make beautiful things out of us
And now, there's more...
Two weeks after my miscarriage, we went to a follow-up appointment. We didn't think we would know whether our sweet baby was a boy or a girl this side of Heaven, but we were pleasantly surprised when our doctor asked us if we wanted to find out. Smiling, we found out we had a little girl! We were just as excited as we were when we found out Newbie was a little boy. My stomach was full of butterflies, and hand in hand, the Hubs and I walked out of the office grinning from ear to ear. Our daughter was waiting for us.
We knew we wanted to name our sweet baby before we went to the appointment, and we had a list of gender neutral names on the drawing board. Our list quickly dissipated when we found out we had a little girl. Her name would be Eden Dawn. Eden, because our sweet little girl would never have to know anything but paradise and complete, perfect fellowship with our Father, as it was always intended to be. Dawn, because her daddy witnessed her resurrection as the sun rose early on a morning in late June, and she would share her middle name with her aunt and grandmother. It was without a doubt the perfect fit for our sweet girl.
Thank you, all of you, who have traveled this road with us- who have hurt with us, cried with us, read with us, prayed with us, rejoiced with us.
He does, indeed, make beautiful things out of the dust.
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. -Isaiah 43:19

The Father of Lights
I haven't written about my baby for a couple weeks. We've been processing our loss and getting back into our routine and trying to figure out what it looks like to be parents to a baby in Heaven and to the little one under our roof. We ache for the one far from us, and we snuggle the one near us. We smile for the one we have in Heaven, and we smile for the one we have here, grateful we can pray for both, hope for one, and tickle the other.
God has walked with us, filling us with joy and hope, but we still miss that little baby bump. We miss the hope of meeting a tiny someone in January. We ache to hold our second little one. The ache hurts. Bad. But the hope of holding our sweet baby in January is replaced by the hope of holding our sweet baby when we go Home. And let me tell you something: hope is beautiful, and hope, my friends, is something we will always have.
For a while I debated writing about this portion of our story because its so close to my heart. I also debated sharing because this portion of our story belongs to the Hubs- it was something he experienced, whereas the rest of the story I've shared has been about what I experienced. But several friends have told me the full story, the story with both my story and my husband's combined, really brings God's hand and work in my baby's story full circle. And there's nothing I desire more than the Lord's work in this experience to flourish, that He might be glorified. I'm going to share more of our story today because I want you to have the opportunity to see the beautiful things that God has done. And, my goodness, has He done beautiful things.
What I share below is another incredible portion of blessing God offered to my husband and I when we lost our baby. In previous posts, I've shared my part of the story- the enormous slices of blessing the Lord served up in the form of visions. But this time, it's something my husband experienced- something that might be hard to imagine or wrap one's mind around, but when something like what I'm about to describe happens to you, you don't question it. You don't even believe it because you just know. It's not a question of whether or not you believe it really happened. You know it did. You know that it happened, and you don't care whether or not others believe it because you know it.
You know
the depth of it,
the beauty of it,
the glory in it,
and the wonder of it.
I know this to be true because I had a similar experience; I've been there. You question not the possibility or means by which such things happen because there is nothing to question; you know it happened, and that is what matters. There is nothing to do but turn your heart to Heaven, smile, and be filled with joy and praise for the One who does all good things. Because you held one of those good things- you experienced it, and it was so, so good.
It's up to others to decide whether they will hold that thing and turn their hearts and smile and accept the blessing and encouragement that comes when God allows us the opportunity to see Himself at work. It matters not to you because you know, and you are grateful and your heart is full to the point of overflowing.
When the Hubs told me what he experienced, I held it, cherished it, tucked it into my being and turned to Heaven and smiled. My heart was filled with joy and praise, and I was oh, so very blessed by his story.
I hope you will hold this and smile and be blessed too. =)
The week of my miscarriage, God gave me a glorious vision of my baby in Heaven, and when my husband got home that evening, I shared with him what God had shown me. I spent a lot of time describing the incredible light- the glorious light of God- radiating in every bit of the vision. The Hubs stopped me at one point and asked with a hint of intensity, "There was a light? A brilliant light?" I could tell he was processing a thought of his own, but I blazed forward in my story because I was so excited to tell him what I had seen.
When our conversation ended, the Hubs stopped and looked at me as silent tears slipped down his cheeks. He said, "I'm so happy God showed that to you. And I have to tell you about something He showed me too."
My eyes grew wide as I sat across from him on the bed, and my heart raced with anticipation. Could it be? Could it be that God would show us even more of our baby's story?
The Hubs continued, "I know you think we lost our baby on the fourth of July, but we didn't. I know we didn't." My heart skipped a beat as I listened to him. We went to the doctor the evening after the fourth of July, when I was suppose to have been turning the corner on 10 weeks pregnant. Our baby was measuring 9 weeks in the ultra sound, so I had assumed since my symptoms started July third and carried into the fourth, that we had lost our baby some time around the fourth or fourth of July weekend, because I still would have been 9 weeks at that time.
As I looked at him, sure he was about to reveal something he knew about the timing of our baby's journey to Heaven, he said again, "I know we didn't lose our baby on the fourth of July. I know we didn't. It was before then. Do you remember that morning last week when I woke up and told you I had a crazy dream?"
I nodded that I remembered, reeling back to the morning the Sunday before when he had told me as soon as he rolled out of bed that he had a strange dream but couldn't find the words to describe it. I thought it odd that he couldn't come up with the words to tell me what the dream was about, but I shrugged it off and went on with my morning. As I looked across the bed into my husband's eyes, I knew he had the words now, and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to hear what happened to him.
"I didn't make the connection until you described the light you saw in Heaven- the brilliant, radiating light. Brittany, I saw that same kind of light- I saw that light in the early hours of the morning the Sunday before last. I had was sleeping, and usually I can remember my dreams vividly. I was dreaming, but suddenly my dream went to complete black. I was lying on my right side, you were to my left, and through my closed eyes, I noticed a light coming from your side of the bed. I turned my head to the left, and the more I turned towards you, the brighter the light became. My eyes were still closed, but I wasn't dreaming anymore- I hadn't been since everything in my dream went black. I turned my head toward your side of the bed, and the light grew brighter. It was too bright to see anything but it's radiance. Even with my eyes shut, I saw that it was everywhere, exactly the kind of light you described when you were talking about the light in Heaven- glorious and brilliant, bright and pure.
From behind my eyelids, I watched it hang there, over you, consuming you and your side of the room in complete brilliance, and then it just disappeared. Once it had gone, I opened my eyes and there you were, still sleeping. I looked out the window, and it was becoming light outside. I knew it was dawn, but it was still pretty dark outside, so I closed my eyes again and went back to sleep. Then when we woke up, I told you I had a strange dream but couldn't explain it.
I know what the light was now. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was the light of angels taking our baby to Heaven. It was the same light you described, and I know. I know it was the light of Heaven coming down to take our little one up to Him."
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I absorbed everything he had shared with me. I smiled through the blur and reached over to hug him. We prayed together because you know what? There's simply nothing else in the world to do but pray and praise the Lord when your husband sits across from you and tells you he saw the light of angels taking your baby to Heaven. That's what we were made to do: praise the Lord, and when you come face to face with the work of His hands, when the Creator of the universe reaches down and hands you a brilliant and glorious gift, you praise Him. And so, we prayed and praised and prayed some more. We held the gift God had given us. We held it, and savored it, turned our hearts to Heaven and smiled with hope and joy overflowing.
I was so overwhelmed by the gift God had given us in letting the Hubs witness a piece of our baby's resurrection, I felt my heart could burst. I smiled because God is so good and because He is mighty to save. I smiled because I have the incredible treasure of knowing when my baby was resurrected from this life and taken into the hands of Jesus. I smiled because not only did Jesus show me my baby's beginning in Heaven, but He also showed the Hubs a glimpse of our baby's trip to that beautiful place.
And the greatest piece I took away? My baby was taken care of. My baby was wrapped up in the light of Heaven the very moment God commanded it to be so. My baby's story was written in God's book before it came to be (Psalm 139), and He had a plan before the doctors even knew something was amiss.
The Father of lights?
He cares.
For me.
For you.
For everyone.
He has a plan. You are a part of it.
I took my story and asked Him to make it His own.
Now my story is a part of His, and His story is a part of mine. Friends, I hope yours is too.
Because the Father of lights?
His story never ends.
There is more to my family's story. More to smile about. More I have to share with you about our baby. And I will...very soon. =)
For now, I hope you have a fabulous weekend, and that you have the opportunity to spend some time smiling with me in gratitude for the good and perfect gifts coming down to us from the Father of lights today.
xoxo,
Brittany

"Every good and perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights."
-James 1:17
coming down from the Father of lights."
-James 1:17
For now, I hope you have a fabulous weekend, and that you have the opportunity to spend some time smiling with me in gratitude for the good and perfect gifts coming down to us from the Father of lights today.
xoxo,
Brittany

Blueberries for Newbie
Soft and plump, they plop in the pail
We pick and pick, but to no avail...
Little fingers swipe the bucket's inside
Just no place for those berries to hide
Some are green, and some are blue
Matters not to him as it might to you
Blueberry leaves and blueberry stems
He gobbles them up, and then he grins
Pop! Pop! Pop! Eats them one by one
Oh boy, will tomorrow's diaper be fun!
...just keepin' it real, folks. =)
Happy Wednesday!

Moonlight Swim and the BEST Beach Ever
We had a whirlwind of a weekend that's left me wanting more coffee and more sleep this morning because we just had so. much. fun.
Friday Newbie and I met up with the gang for a pool date. We had a lot of fun catching up with mamas and kiddos. It was a ball to watch the littles interact and bob around in the pool since it has been awhile since we were all together. Newbie and I went home with the smell of chlorine in our hair and zonked out for a fabulous nap Friday afternoon...mission accomplished. =)
Friday night the family circus met up with some friends for a twilight swim at our favorite beach/park. I had a lot of fun calling them and asking if they wanted to go for a "twilight swim"...it just sounds so summery and perfect. It was. We watched the littles splash around in the sprinklers, then we hung out on the beach as the sun sank low in the sky. Drinking in every last drop of summer, baby.
The waves were quiet, the water warm, and we had a whale of a day out on the beach. We'll be going back again soon, and if you're a local, get a hold of me because you simply *must* visit this beach before the summer is out!

I'm off to check the weather forecast and see what kind of summer fun we can squeeze into the calendar this week. A return trip to the Best Beach Ever is definitely in the works. =)
Happy Monday!

Water. Logged.
Saturday the Hubs and I loaded up the beach bag again and headed out for what we now know as THE BEST BEACH EVER. This place was incredible. It is only about 10 minutes south of where we spent a week at the cottage earlier this summer, and it was well worth the drive. The beach sand is pooled with wading pools that connect a small lake to the big lake.
The pools vary in depth and aren't any deeper than two or three feet, creating an ideal beach front for the littles. There are a couple channels that connect the pools with the big lake, and I can't tell you how much fun we had wandering between our little spot in the sand by the small pool and the big lake. The waves were quiet, the water warm, and we had a whale of a day out on the beach. We'll be going back again soon, and if you're a local, get a hold of me because you simply *must* visit this beach before the summer is out!
