Baby, It's Hot Outside

I've got the hives. Seriously. Not the hives where the bumble bees hang out or the crazy up-do. We're talking the full-blown, red welts, whattheheckhappendtoyou?!? itchy bumps. All over my legs. The doc gave me an allergy medicine last night that I'm pretty convinced was laced with some sort of sleep agent. Because when the little one woke up to eat this morning at 7, I hobbled out of bed, almost ran into the wall, fed him, then went back into the bedroom crying begging the Hubs to please stay home so I could sleep on account of I couldn't even stand up straight. Laced I tell you. I lay in bed trying to sleep off the drugs for the first half of the day, and finally pulled it together by lunchtime. After this experience I know two things:

1) I am not taking any more allergy pills. Good. Night. What kind of insanity is governing the world when a nursing mom is told to take allergy pills that make her too sleepy to stand on her own two feet?!? I don't need any help in the too-sleepy-to-function department, thankyouverymuch.

2) Newbie has been sleeping like a sloth or some kind of cute animal that sleeps a whooole lot today, and I'm pretty sure it can be chalked up to the fact that his mama was doped up on allergy meds for the first 4 feedings of the day. Ugg.

In other news, it is SO warm outside today. After the Hubs took off for work (much to my dismay...I may or may not have cried a little...) I loaded up Newbie, and we went for a walk. We live near a park and there is a huge carnival there this weekend. The carnival means two things:

1) Some creepies walking back and forth in front of our house as they make their way to and from the carnival at all hours of the day or night throughout the week.

2) Funnel cakes. Cotton candy. Fresh squeezed lemonade. All within a 5 minute walk from my front door. As if the local Dairy Queen wasn't enough of a post-pregnancy temptation...now I have all the delights of circus food only minutes away. Mmm...

So needless to say, by the time Newbie and I had made it half way around the park, I was jonesing for some lemonade and a good pile of blue cotton candy. Unfortunately, I left my wallet at home in case some creepies tried to mug me, so I have to wait til the Hubs gets home to beg for another trip to the park with a few extra bucks in my pocket. Don't you looove carnival food? I mean, what's with the corndog? Why does it taste so stinking good?!? Sigh. So much for swim season, folks. The carnival is going to do me in.

With this warm weather today, Newbie is going to be putting on a fashion show. All of his newborn outfits were t-shirt onesies that weren't warm enough for him to wear the past two weeks. And now he's just about into his 3 month clothes. So today we're going to switch outfits every 15 minutes so we can say he got some use out of all those adorable itsy bitsy newborn outfits. Otherwise those puppies will never see the outside of Newbie's dresser drawer.

Gosh, I want some lemonade. Bad.

The heat today also reminded me of summer. And BBQ. Which reminded me of how messed up my backyard flowerbeds are because I didn't weed or put down any wood chips before Newbie was born. It's like Pandora out there now. Excuse the Avatar reference...the Hubs and I just watched it for the first time last weekend as a "Hey! Look! We have a newborn and we are somehow managing to sorta have a date night by watching the world's highest grossing movie in the comfort of our own living room!" Except it wasn't a great date night because I was tired and there were diapers to change, and all the blue people chanting around the tree made the Hubs roll his eyes and walk out of the room on account of he is not the biggest sci-fi fan and certainly not the biggest tree-hugging/chanting combo fan. So anyway, the backyard looks like Pandora, minus the chanting blue people, and I have no idea when I'm going to get out there and whip her into shape. Gardening is my absolute FAVORITE part of spring, but this year we might just write the backyard off as a lost cause. Who knows, maybe we can rake in some crazy rainbow terridactyles (the blog is saying I am spelling this wrong. I mean the flying dinosaurs that start with a "T") to fly us around the block or something if we let it grow a little longer. Too much on the Avatar references? Sorry. Couldn't help myself.

Some creepies just walked by the front of my house. I told you so.

Wow. I'm long winded today. Can you tell my baby is sleeping and my hands are free for the first time in 48 hours?!?!

Speaking of my little man, here are a few pics from last night...

I have a thing for baby feet.

And apparently a thing for horrific photography too. But I can't help it. I have important things like conspiring ways to get the Hubs to pick up some carnival cotton candy on his way home from work to keep me from bothering with things like figuring out how to take a decent picture every once in a while. Maybe next week. After I get my lemonade and cotton candy. =)

Hibernation

So I'm packing my bags and crawling out of my hormonal/emotional/sweat pant-ridden cave into the real world once again. The past two weeks I have been so overwhelmed learning the ropes of being a new mommy that I have been living in my sweatpants and enjoying emotional meltdowns on a pretty consistent 16 to 20 hour rotation. I have also experienced an increase in my already far-higher-than-average germaphobe tendencies. The thing about being a mama is that I am now a shameless germaphobe, asking all our visitors to take off their shoes and wash their hands and visit the hazmat tent before touching our sweet boy. And I have a "no sickies please" sign hanging on my front door. Not really. But only because the Hubs wouldn't let me.

Regardless of the craziness of the past two weeks and my increased germ awareness, I've put on my big girl pants and a little make-up and I'm ready to face the world again.

Coming out of newborn baby hibernation feels good. I can't promise I won't be in sweatpants or standing at the door with a mega bottle of hand sanitizer, but if you've been waiting for the OK, we would love to start having visitors come over and meet our sweet Newbie! We still have to play by the rules and keep him away from any sickness, but the bottom line is this mama is finally ready to share her little man. =) If you'd like to stop by, give us a call and we will find a time that works!

Speaking of the real world, I had to get out for a doctor appointment today (the rash turned out to be hives, and the solution was a med other than Benidryl. Benydril. Benedryl. How do you spell that?!?) and I had to go to the grocery store to pick up a prescription. It was liberating. Did you know the sun is shining out there? And there are dogs frolicking and birds singing and grass growing. And I never even knew it until today because I've been so busy living in my sweatpants and snuggling my baby and eating fudgecicles and catching up on NBC's Parenthood. So we're going to have to make a habit of getting out in the fresh air a little bit more. Because it was refreshing. We still have to avoid public places, but since the backyard isn't public and the park is pretty airy, I'm thinking we just might make it outside our door this weekend. Mmm...real life is slowly coming back...and it's so much sweeter now that we have this little heart to enjoy it with. =)

While Mama is blogging...

This is the view I have this afternoon.

It just doesn't get any sweeter.

on being a mama

first of all, i love it. I LOVE being a mama.

second, it is hard to type with one hand...but i just can't put this adorable little boy down.

third, if i knew how stocks worked or how to buy some, i'd buy up stock in diapers. unfortunately, my "stock" education boils down to playing LIFE and hoping someone spun at 7 so i could buy some more kids or a different colored car. i think we blew through 15 today alone and it is only 4:33. sure wish i knew more about stocks.

OK. I surrendered my babe to the car seat because the English major in me just couldn't handle all the lower case letters.

Back to business.

On being a mama:

I am having so much fun spending my days with this little squirt. It's a little diapers, a little nursing, a little freaking out when I don't know why he's crying, and a whole lotta snuggling.

Also, I am beginning to come around, folks. Those first two weeks were rough. I was drowning in hormones and sweatpants last week, and I have officially started to gain some ground in the get dressed and get with it department. A little ground. Don't hold me accountable. I still haven't touched a hair dryer in two months. Today I threw on the flip flops for our first solo walk around the neighborhood. Sure, Newbie tinkled on my shirt right before we left (he is SO good at that) and had another dirty diaper before we even made it out the door, but the blisters I now have on my feet and the fresh air we got on our 30 minute jaunt was well worth it. It's funny how the smallest tasks seem to take an army these days. Just walking to the mailbox is a big deal around here now.

In other news, I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow for some hives that have been chilling out on my legs for two weeks now, and I'm already booking a babysitter for Newbie since the thought of piling him up in the car seat and hauling him into the doctor's office sends me into a full blown panic. His G-mama is coming for the afternoon tomorrow to watch him while I waltz into the doctor's office and literally hear myself say the dreaded words: "so Doc...I've got this rash..." Ugg. But seriously. These hives have me feeling like I'm 9 months pregnant and dreaming about starfish all over again. I would link up to the post about the starfish here, but its a little embarrassing, so if you happened to read that one a month ago, it will be our little secret. If you didn't read it. You missed nothing more than a little bit of my crazy playing itself out in the ninth month of my pregnancy- not pretty, folks.

Despite the rash, I'm having an amazing time being a mama. Monday night Newbie and I took off with the family on a little trip to the zoo where my sister is getting married (I know. I know. But it is going to be the COOLEST wedding ever. EVER.) to my brother-in-law (I know. I know. But they are SO perfect for each other.) Newbie and I got a little lost and happened upon a perfect photo opp. Here's a pic of Newbie with his first snow leopard. Or puma. Or something.

And I'm having fun playing with all of his new toys. Last week I was so overwhelmed with diapers and hormones and breathing that I didn't have any mental capacity to enjoy all the fun things Newbie has around the house to entertain him. So far the bouncer is not his favorite...

Most of my day is spent just looking at him. Or kissing his neck rolls. Or trying not to squish the soft spot on his head. That thing freaks me out. Or munching on his little toes. Or Eskimo kissing his teeny nose. Oh. My. Goodness. This little man is my favorite.

I'm off to put the casserole in the oven that has been sitting out on the stove while the oven preheats for the past 45 minutes. Oops! Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Diapers and Kankles

Today something catastrophic in terms of postpartum recovery happened...

I sorta felt like painting my toe nails. Sorta. But the significant part of that phenomena is that after 12 days of wearing nothing but sweatpants and a ponytail, I actually stopped long enough to take stock and realize I could use a pedicure touch up. I didn't do anything about it, of course, but the thought was there, and that has got to count for something these days.

Also, so far this morning, my hair is down and not in a ponytail. Not done. Just down. But still.

Slowly but surely we may be creeping our way towards looking decent enough to step out into the real world again.

The Hubs left for the grocery store this morning, triumphantly declaring he will let me know what the outside world looks like when he gets back. He was also determined to rent Avatar for us to watch this afternoon so we could say we actually did something other than stare at each other while Newbie slept. It's a time warp; it really is. I love this sweet boy so much, but I have to say, I'm glad I bought those pillow slipcovers from IKEA last fall so I have a little pizazz around here because I haven't seen much outside of these four walls in two weeks. It's also a good thing this little baby is so stinking cute. He keeps the view interesting. Especially during diaper changes. Did I just say that?! But really. The diapers. No one could have prepared me for the diapers. I need to hire an excavation crew or something. They can be brutal.

In other news, somehow the three of us managed to scrape almost 8 hours of sleep out of last night. We may have only gotten 7 feedings of the "8 minimum required," but after rolling over in bed at feeding time seeing a zonked out baby for the first time in hours, I decided that was a hit we were willing to take. So today we're on the wake 'em up and feed 'em schedule so the lactation consultants don't come knocking on my door. But last night was heavenly once we got past the cooing and fussing and to the sleeping. Ahh...

Overall, we're doing great over here. I absolutely LOVE being a mama, though it's tougher than I anticipated. Who knew nursing isn't exactly glamorous and that I'm really good at panic attacks on the weekend when all the doctor offices are closed and my son has a goopy eye? But we're plowing through it one day at a time, and feeling good. I'm feeling better than I have in two weeks, and I'm loving being able to lie on my stomach and bend over to tie my own shoes. You know, if I ever went anywhere where I needed to tie my own shoes. And my kankles are gone, which is of great importance seeing as how I was beginning to worry they were going to just up and blend right into my hips. Whew. Bullet dodged. No promises on swimsuit season this year, but at least I can rock a pair of flip-flops without the kankles to slow me down. =)

No pictures because the camera is in the other room and I'm just that lazy today...but I'll make up for it next time. Enjoy your Sunday!

I'm playing Kanga

Mother , O Mother, come shake out your cloth
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.
Where is the mother, whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery blissfully rocking.
Oh, I've grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue.
Lullaby, rockabye, lullaby loo.

Dishes are waiting and bills are past due,
Lullaby, rockabye, lullaby loo.

The shoppings not done and there's nothing for stew, and out in the yard there's a hullabaloo.
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Lullabye, rockabye, lullaby loo.

The cleaning and scrubbing can wait for tomorrow, but children grow up as I've learned to my sorrow. So quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep!

7 days a week

When I left the hospital and was reminded by the nurse to be sure to take care of myself when I got home and to always remember to "empty my bladder," I laughed because I thought "I might be crazy, lady, but I don't need you to remind me to go to the bathroom."

I was wrong.

I had no idea how busy being a new mama could be! Thank goodness for nurses who remind you to go to the bathroom, family who remind you to sleep, and friends who remind you to eat. I joked with my mom this morning that me and Newbie are on the same program: eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, all day long, 7 days a week. The days are tumbling one over the other, and I can't believe he's already 11 days old. I had a freak out yesterday when I realized I hadn't taken pictures in a few days because I had been so busy trying to remember to go to the bathroom. So here's a few candid shots of our little man, who is ALREADY getting big and starting to look differently than he did in the hospital. I can't believe it. Before you know it, he'll be running around the house killing bugs for me and mowing the yard with his daddy. Who knows, maybe I can even talk him into doing my laundry. =)

You'll have to excuse the 1980's quality of these pictures...I have completely lost my incredible knack for fantastic photography somewhere between going into labor while watching American Idol last week and not sleeping more than 2 consecutive hours in 11 days. One of these days we'll have his aunt and uncle photography duo out here to take some pictures, but that requires organization and planning, which I have also completely misplaced. So enjoy the dark blurry pictures and keep your fingers crossed that I might find my sanity someday soon and get some decent pictures taken before this little guy is three feet tall. =)

That last one cracks me up. What a ham...probably laughing at his mama after blasting through two diapers in 2 minutes. He's got talent, folks. =)

Skunked

Sometimes it's hard to wade through the ocean of raging post-pregnancy hormones to find your sense of humor, but last night mine caught up with me real fast. There are some things that have happened in the past 8 days that leave me to wonder...why don't they tell you these things in the parenting books or in that stinking 139 dollar childbirth class we took two months ago?!?

1) We got skunked, Danny. We got skunked. Last night the Hubs went to change his first solo stinky diaper and did a fantastic job up until he made a crucial mistake...he failed to place a fresh diaper under the stinky diaper. There was a rumble, then a gurgle, then an epic explosion the likes of which not even Opie could compete. We got skunked. Baby poo was rocket launched all over the Hubs, all over me, the carpet, the changing table, the drapes (what?!?!), and possibly even the ceiling. But the thing about the Hubs is, you just can't keep the man down. I took Newbie to get cleaned up and the Hubs continued to do damage control until the biohazard was completely cleaned up. Why don't they prep you for epic explosions? Nobody told us this kiddo could pull that off!

2) They say you don't get sleep. But what they don't say is that you really don't get sleep. My days of 8 hours or more of cozy snoozing have flashed before my eyes more than once in the past week. The Hubs and I have been sneaking in naps as much as we can, but still wake up to take care of Newbie at 4 in the morning bumping into walls and stumbling over eachother with a glazed-over look communicating our hopes and dreams for the day when this guy be able to change his own diapers.

3) They don't tell you about little boys and their loaded guns. Similar to skunking, come to find out, little boys are really good at aiming and firing right as you're wrapping up the new diaper and think you're in the clear. The good news: word on the street is that tinkle is sterile. Thank goodness.

4) They don't tell you how adorable your baby will be or how you won't be able to pull your eyes away from his face or set him down no matter how many loads of laundry aren't done or dinners aren't made. I cannot let go of this sweet baby boy. He is absolutely precious, and I could just snuggle him all day long and get nothing else done. And I think that's OK. =)

5) They don't tell you how hard it is to give a newborn a bath. I am terrified of giving this little guy the "spit bath" required of the first 7-14 days. Good thing newborns smell so good, otherwise the world may find out that he's only had two said baths since we got home because his mama is so afraid she's going to break the rules about getting the belly button wet or not dressing him as I go so he doesn't get cold. I am looking forward to the days of the true bath, where I can dunk him in a tub of warm toasty water and then stick him in a monkey towel and smother him in delicious smelling baby lotion. Mmm...

6) The other thing they don't tell you is how much time you won't have to blog or post pictures or call friends and family or finish watching American Idol or get dressed even though all you have to do is feed, diaper, and rock your sweet baby. Somehow those three little tasks take up just about every minute of every day.

On that note, I better get back to being a mama- and I wouldn't have it any other way! =)

One Week!

Happy One Week Birthday, Newbie!

I can't believe it has been one week since we met our sweet little boy. Giving birth and coming home to a newborn is like a time warp- my days blend together, my nights tumble one over the other, and more than a few mama meltdowns and dirty diapers later, here we are, with a sweet one week old baby boy who we couldn't love more!

Being his mama has been such an incredible journey so far...I can only imagine what the weeks to come will look like. He is such a good little baby- only crying when he's got a dirty diaper or when Mama is a little slow on the draw at breakfast, 2nd breakfast, lunch, 2nd lunch, dinner, 3rd dinner, dessert, 3rd dessert, and 4th dessert. Poor baby. I never knew how much I could love something so tiny until 9:20 am hit last week Wednesday. What a blessing. We are head over heels for this sweet boy, and can't believe we've been entrusted with the gift and privilege of raising him. So sweet.

Heads-Up: The following is an encounter that is almost certainly too much information, but as a mama, I have life chronicling obligations and cannot escape the necessity to write about my son's birth story. So if you're not interested, or don't have 89 minutes to read through the following, skip down to the adorable pictures at the end, and forgive me for being too lazy to put this in a scrapbook and insisting to post it to my family blog instead. Also, medical words are hard to spell...and its possible I even made some up. =)

Newbie's Birth Story
A week ago last night I was sitting at the computer trying to watch a smorgasbord of tv and time what I thought might be contractions at the same time. I had been up since 3:45 Monday morning with some cramping, but figured it was just the Mexican food we pounded down over the weekend- ha! The Hubs was gone Tuesday night, so I sat alone at the computer clicking a button when the pain started and hitting it again when it stopped. For a while I had a hard time even deciding when they stopped or started, but figured I would try to time them just in case. We were waiting to go to the hospital until the contractions were 5 minutes apart and 1 minute long for one hour. At about 2 hours I called the Hubs crying asking him to please come home because what was happening to me?!? He came home, and we sat timing the little buggers until I started to have a hard time walking/standing/breathing/living and then called the doctor. Looking back at the timing of those contractions, I am surprised we didn't have Newbie on the living room floor...after 4 hours, my contractions had gone from one minute long and seven minutes apart to being one minute long and two minutes apart. I have no idea why we waited so long other than to say I was in my pj's and didn't want to end up going up to the hospital only to be sent back home. That, and Parenthood was on NBC...I didn't want to miss it. Ha! But eventually I was begging the Hubs to take me to the hospital in the middle of each contraction, and he happily agreed.

So the Hubs threw all of our bags into the car and drug me out the door as I threw the last load of laundry into the washing machine. I remember thinking it was really important that those jeans got washed. And now I have no idea where they are.

When we got to the hospital, I was still walking OK, but they wheeled us up to triage to measure contractions and check all my vitals. We were told it would take 20 minutes for them to decide whether they would keep me there or send me home, but we ended up waiting an hour and half because Newbie wasn't moving and shaking like they wanted him to, and his mama had a high blood pressure reading. During the course of that hour and a half, my contractions got stronger, and we moved from 1 cm to 4. Whoa. This kiddo was ready to roll. The Hubs was wonderful and sweet and supportive and truly a hero while I sat there breathing through contractions. The whole time I remember feeling really mellow. We had waited for so long to meet our little man, and I was completely filled with anticipation of his arrival and the gift of peace that surpasses understanding. After the hour and a half, the nurse said they were keeping us (woohoo!) and asked if I'd rather go upstairs to get my epidural or if I would like to soak in the whirlpool bath. WHAT?!? I told her I would have taken the epidural last week if they had let me and please get me upstairs right now. She did.

To make a long story even longer, it took 7 nurses to find a vein for my iv. At this point, I was shaking out of exhaustion- both physically and mentally thinking, "What on earth am I gonna do if they can't get an iv in, and I have to go all noble and have this baby without an epidural?!?" One nurse got for real on my right hand, and I still have the bruise to show for it. I still testify that the Great IV Hunt of April 14th was the most painful part of my labor and delivery. I was a legend among the nurses- even in my recovery room they had heard of my dilemma. Ouch. Finally, the anesthesiologist (bless his heart) came in there like he owned the place, popped an iv in and got started on the epidural. While he placed the epidural in my back, he kept going on with all this scientific mumbo jumbo about what he was doing and how it worked, and you just don't do that to a lady who is in the middle of some 5 cm contractions. I had no idea what he was talking about and seriously thought he was giving me some run-around explanation about why the epidural wasn't working. Soon, however, he left the room and my legs turned to jello and the Hubs and I crashed around 4:30 hoping to catch a few Z's.

My family showed up to say hello, and my mom and sister stayed in the room- designated photographers and cheerleaders for our big event. The time passed quickly, and by 7:45 am, my OB had come in to check me and broke my water at 6+ centimeters. This is when she said Newbie was facing the ceiling and needed to be facing the floor, and this is also when I heard her whisper to the nurse that it was going to be a difficult delivery and maybe require a C-section. Dear doctors: please whisper quieter. I was running on 48 hours with no sleep and did not want to hear that I had a long day ahead of me. By now Newbie and I both had fevers and they decided to start a petocin drip to move things along. Despite everything going on around me, I was still wrapped in a peace I can't explain, praise the Lord, because everything was starting to get intense. I sent word out to several prayer warriors asking them to pray my baby would flip and get ready for take off. The nurse did some fancy footwork and left the room. In 5 minutes she came back and I asked her if it was normal to feel like my baby was ready to go. She told me to just press the epidural button. To which I replied, "No- I mean, it doesn't hurt, it just feels like he is right there." She explained that petocin rarely works that quickly, and that I probably just needed another hit on the epidural button, but that she'd check me anyway. So she did. And I was 10 cm dilated, 100% effaced, and Newbie was at a +2...meaning: he was right there. So she flew around the room getting ready for delivery while the rest of us freaked out and praised God for such a swift answer to prayer. Newbie had flipped and was ready to roll within 10 minutes of an "its going to be a difficult delivery" diagnosis- praise the Lord!

We were all set and ready, literally only waiting for my OB. When she came back to the room (she had left to go to her office down the street, convinced I wasn't going to have this baby til mid afternoon) we started getting down to business. My mom stood in the room taking pictures, my sister stood behind the curtain trying not to pass out, and the Hubs stood next to me- also trying not to pass out. =) I pushed for 10 minutes and delivered our sweet little baby at 9:20 am on April 14, 2010. I could not have asked for a larger answer to prayer that his quick and safe delivery following the evaluation of my doctors. We were so excited to meet him! After a little snuggle time, he was whisked away to the bassinet where he sat for 2 hours being tested and pricked and prodded due to his fever and high respiratory rate. The story that follows is the true miracle, as within the first 28 hours of his life, we were not able to hold our sweet boy longer than half an hour, we couldn't feed him, and he spent the day getting tested and the evening in the intermediate NICU after much debate over what was best for him. Very hard on a new mama and daddy, and certainly no fun for our sweet little boy. We prayed and asked others to join us in prayer over and over again that day and into the next. After 9 hours in the NICU, we went to visit our little one and were told his respiratory rate had completely stabilized over night and that he had been fed several bottles and could go back to the room with us! At this news, we were overwhelmed with gratitude and gratefulness for our God who never leaves us and is always faithful. We took our little bundle back to our room that afternoon, and have been loving on him and praising God for his sweet goodness and provision ever since.

The week since that day has flown by, and I can only guess how much more quickly the days to come will pass. In the meantime, we are continuing to look to the Lord as parents and we are praising Him from whom all blessings flow for his endless goodness and grace. God is good all the time, and we know that now in a way we didn't fully understand until last Wednesday. Praise the Lord!

Here are the pictures I promised =) We've been snuggling this little bundle like there's nothing else to do in the world:

A dry diaper? What's that?

God is so good...

In the last 6 days since our son was delivered, He has literally answered every single one of our prayers. We feel so humbled by His love and so encouraged by His faithfulness and provision. Today we had our first pediatric appointment since being discharged from the hospital. I was one nervous mama waiting to go see the doctor...we went through so many tests and shots and uncertainties last week at the hospital, that my heart was a mess hoping everything had remained consistent and that our sweet boy was still healthy.

After a few tears and a high order to strip him down to a "dry diaper"...dry diaper? Really? On a little boy with a constantly loaded gun?!? Much easier said than done! But we eventually got there, and after the doctor check him from head to toe, we were told that everything looks good! Praise the Lord! Our little man is on the right track! After everything we saw him go through last week, we could not be more thankful for a good report today! We are still under orders to limit his contact with visitors and to avoid any sickness, but we are so very, very happy to have walked away breathing a big sigh of relief at a healthy check-up. Back in two weeks to see how much he's grown. =)

I am breaking my own rules tonight and watching 24 instead of sleeping while our little guy snoozes. I'm sure I'll regret it some time between the hours of 1 and 5 in the morning, but sometimes a girl just needs to watch some Jack Bauer power and unwind.

Here are some pics we've taken yesterday and today...

Our snuggle bug all zonked out on the way to the doctor

Catching his first hockey game with Daddy

And showing off the great accomplishment of getting fully dressed and ready for the day with Mama...we usually hang out in our pj's =)

Blessings to you and thank you for praying for our little family!

The best cuddler. Ever.

I am so excited to have things more exciting to blog about than squirrels in my ceiling and my latest Dairy Queen addiction. This little boy is the star of the show around here, and we've discovered he is absolutely the best cuddler. Ever.

My mom came over and spent the night last night, which was a huge help given our week long run of only getting 30 minute spurts throughout the night. So today I'm feeling far more ambitious than I have in a while and thought I'd put this energy to good use and post a bucket load of pictures. Who doesn't love pictures of a sweet, soft, squishy baby?!?

Our little family of three is doing well, and Opie is enjoying his stay at Camp G-mama and G-Daddy. Not sure when I'll be feeling brave enough to welcome him back home, but each day is getting a little more routine, so hopefully we'll have our little fuzz ball back soon.

Thank you all for celebrating with us and praying us through last week! Tomorrow Newbie has his first doctor's appointment, and if I can manage to scrape up enough sleep in the next 48 hours, I'll post an update. Daddy goes back to work tomorrow, leaving Mama here to fend for herself. Toss in a prayer for us as we start this next week of transition back into work and real life - we're gonna need it! =)

Home!!! & Visitors

We're home!

After a very busy morning and lots of follow-up tests on our sweet baby, we were given the OK to go home Friday afternoon! We are so happy our sweet boy was able to come with us! We had such a fun assortment of cards and flowers and balloons to take home with us too- thank you to everyone who sent us something to brighten up our little hospital room!

Because our sweet baby boy spent time in the INICU, several things have gone differently than we had planned. We were told by our doctors to wait to have visitors until the weekend of April 24 & 25 when our little one will have had time to adjust to being home. His respiratory rates in the first days have the doctors wanting us to be extra careful about keeping things low-key and making sure Newbie is eating well and getting plenty of rest, and avoiding others' illness. We are doing a lot of hand washing around here! Luckily, this works out well for his parents too, as we have had about 8 solid hours of sleep since Monday night. Yikes! We're slowly but surely playing catch-up and finding our feet when it comes to sleeping and nursing, so we're hoping we'll be ready for visitors next weekend or the week after. There's just so much to juggle with a little guy who had a rough start! If you'd like to come meet our little snuggle bug, give us a call next weekend and we'll try to find a time that works to share him with you all. He's got a long line of sweet friends wanting to give him a good snuggle. =)

I have got to go take advantage of some down time while our little one is zonked out- we are all so exhausted around here, it's a wonder we managed to make a pot of coffee this morning. =) Thank you again for all of your prayers! We are so grateful for your generosity and concern for our son. God has certainly answered the prayers we lifted up, and we are so happy that our little guy is feeling better!

Enormous Things

My eyes are small but they have seen

The beauty of enormous things

Which leads me to believe
There's light enough to see

You make everything glorious
You make everything glorious

Yeah, You make everything glorious
And I am Yours

God has been so faithful to us today. Our sweet baby boy is back with us and out of the INICU! We are singing songs of praise tonight and thanking all of you for praying with us! Please pray for continued respiratory consistency and a test clear of infection tomorrow so we can get this boy home. =)

Thank you so much for your love and prayers, dear friends. Today we have seen the beauty of enormous things!
