Which is no surprise considering Newbie has been hacking up a lung and blowing through a wad of kleenex for the past week.
I guess that's what happens when you live with someone who has no sense of personal space and considers wiping his nose on your sleeve entirely appropriate behavior.
My immune system never stood a chance.
Usually when I'm under the weather it means a wholelotta Dora for the half pint. But today I was inspired by a picture I saw online while I was making my morning rounds through email, Pinterest, and Facebook.
A half a box of noodles and a cup or two of rice later, we were in business.

He has been playing for a solid hour entirely on his own. This FAR SURPASSES brain-rotting TV time and boasts the added bonus of being labeled as "sensory play"- a major brownie point when raising a toddler.

Booya.
With an hour of play, I found myself with plenty of time to get a load of laundry started, dig into my Bible study, and blog. All with a sore throat. What. is. happening?
We'll have to revisit the rice and noodles tomorrow. I love me some get 'er done time sans the challenge of entertaining someone who stays focused on one task for a maximum of nine minutes.
Today is a win, folks.
You want to know what wasn't a win? Saturday morning. Some of you may have been around here long enough to recall The Great Green Smoothie Mishap of 2012 involving an unfortunate encounter between a wooden spoon, a blender, and my digestive track.
This past Saturday was dubbed The Great Green Smoothie Massacre of 2013. Very similar results with the exception of the wood, which was replaced with a shredded PLASTIC and FOIL lid from an orange juice container. I did not discover said lid until Newbie and I had each swallowed enough of a gulp of the smoothie to send me into a frenzy when I discovered that the blueberry seed was not a seed at all but was a chunk of foil. In. my mouth. Nothing like serving your son some shrapnel for breakfast.

(At least it looked good, right? How many of those fancy-pants Pinterest project pictures do you think are actually boasting some kind of epic fail just beneath the pretty pixels?)
I was burdened with some serious guilt when I remembered after his first swig Newbie had exclaimed, "Mommy, dis is da best ice ceam EBER! It is a-licious!" Little did I know then that it had not been a-licious but actually a metal-laced colon disaster waiting to happen. I checked Newbie's smoothie for any trace of my mistake, and his was foil free. Thank goodness. Mine, on the other hand, was sprinkled with disaster. Awesome.
So I had a good hormone-induced cry about it, complete with walking into the bedroom and sobbing to the still-sleeping Hubs that I had effectively ruined another green smoothie and completely fed our son scrap metal for breakfast.
The Hubs is always a trooper for the pregnancy cry. A few "there-there's" and a "no, we don't need to call poison control" later we were back in business with some redemptive eggs and toast. (I should mention I also called my mom to confirm the "no need to freak out theory". She loves waking up to a Brittany-freak-out phone call at eight on a Saturday. Its her love language.) It was decided that the foil would have been blasted to smithereens and Newbie had likely not gotten any at all with the one swig he downed before I went ballistic crazy and threw it all out upon discovering the foil.
Wow. That was a long story. All that to say, I ruined another good green smoothie on Saturday. Par for the course.
[Insert smooth transition from smoothie wreckage to new happenings here...my throat hurts too much to do it myself]
I'm trying to carve out time each day to feed my soul, and this rice and noodle combo today really gave me lots of time to dig into my Bible with the added bonus of some reading time in this little pearl of wisdom this morning:

I've heard great things about this book and decided we're one too many toddler-meltdowns into not having a road map for navigating this parenting gig. I highlighted 50% of what I read today. And put "more highlighters" on the grocery list. I felt like I was back in my dorm room studying. I was one tube of raw cookie dough, three diet Pepsi's, and a good many pounds away from being twenty years old again. It was a beautiful thing. Learning is something I thrive on, and I loved having the time to get for real with some studying this morning.
Rice and noodles, I love you.
In other news, Mowgli is still growing away. We hit the 19 week benchmark yesterday, but with all the booger-slinging going on around here, I haven't taken many pictures. I've felt the bittiest of movement a couple times a day for the past couple weeks now, and its never lost on me what a miracle and a gift this little one is. Praise God from whom all blessings flow...I can't believe I get the honor of doing this again! We're really looking forward to our ultrasound on Monday. Less anxious nerves and more excitement than this time last week. Hoping to spend some time reflecting and writing about my thoughts headed into that appointment, but the rice and noodles are losing their luster, so it will have to wait for another day.
The Hubs surprised me with a package of Oreos this week. I think the timing might have been lost on him, but it was just a perfect reminder of the Oreo party we threw around this time last year. Making every moment count, baby.

(Mowgli's Oreo party= a BIG deal. Love this little one so much already.)
Do you find dinosaurs on your sofa? I do. And I'm thinking a little brother would be a really good time.

Then I think that big bows and a buddy to play dolls with while the boys are wrestling would also be fun.
Boy or girl, this team can't lose either way. =)
Wishing you all a happy Thursday! If you have someone under three feet tall living at your house, I cannot recommend a container of rice and noodles enough. Happy doing. =)
