It was a Circus Day!

They're here!

Hot of the press pictures from Newbie's first birthday bash!

The dance I had to do to get these puppies up on the blog given that my desktop computer is sick with the gout was a serious undertaking, but alas, I am dedicated to giving the people what they want! =)

I cannot tell you how happy these pictures make me.  Saturday was such an exciting day, and it already brings me so much joy to look back on these pictures and remember celebrating Newbie's first year with some of our family and friends.  What a treasure!

I have been just itching to share these photos with y'all because it was a day we will remember forever and because I really love red and white polka dotted baby ties.  I'm just sayin'.

Here's some of our decorations...and yes, that is RED soda pop to be enjoyed on my white carpets while we are trying to sell our house.  No guts, no glory, baby.  And guess what- no spills!

We had a few carnival games for Newbie's buddies to play- complete with prizes in mason jars, but when the mama is making sure her baby doesn't eat the birthday candle, she can't very well be snapping pictures of all the little details, so you'll have to take my word for it...There was a duck pond, bowling, pony rides (on a rocking horse), a feed the lion game, and a photo booth.
Introducing some of our family and friends who were so sweet to come out and party down with us!  We missed getting a shot of Newbie's Great Grandma- our photographer must have gotten side-tracked making balloon animals- but we love you, Grandma!!! =)

And the Birthday Boy himself- he is SO BIG!

When guests arrived, there was some time to play carnival games and hit the photo booth, then we had corndogs and chips for lunch.  After lunch it was present time, and thank goodness for my two little helpers (the sweeties I nannied for), because Newbie wasn't really into the "pick a present and unwrap it" game.  He was, however, all about checking out the toys after they had been unwrapped.  He got some seriously fun stuff- I daresay I had just as much fun playing with his toys yesterday as he did!
After presents, it was time for birthday cake.  My mom worked on that cake for a full week before the party, and weeks before that designing it, and it was the most adorable cake ever! ....All of the pieces were edible- yum!
My little man was not sure what to think of the little smash cake we set on his high chair tray.  I'm not sure if it was the fire on the candle that made him hesitant, or the bright blue icing, or the crowd of eyes watching, but he barely touched the cake.  I finally dug in for him so he could see what was under all the icing, but it wasn't until we pulled out a Plan B chocolate mustache that he really went to town.  Looks like Newbie is a chocolate lover like his mama!

When the crowds dispersed, our parents and Aunt Corndog, Uncle J, and Bugman hung out to help us clean up and assemble a slew of Little Tikes toys.  I don't know what we would have done without their help! Newbie was in hog heaven watching his grandparents unwrap and put together his new stuff.  He crashed for a nap around 3, but was up again relatively soon to catch the rest of the hockey game with his daddy.  Boys will be boys- there's just no time for sleeping if the game is on!

We had such an amazing afternoon celebrating our little man's first year.  It was so special to have family and friends take time out of their day to laugh and play with us.  And we sure missed our family that was out of town- we took lots of video to share! We are so blessed to have such a sweet little boy, and we count it pure joy to have the opportunity to jump into another year with him!

There are a few pieces of the party still hanging out in the house.  I like to let bits of the celebration linger...like leftover birthday cake and slowly sinking helium balloons.  Newbie has been pointing at the balloons for the last two days.  He likes to point to each cluster throughout the house while he sits in his highchair.  I like to think its because he's remembering the fun of his birthday party. =)

I'll be back when my computer is better with some fun pictures and a recap of his actual birthday on Thursday- we had a few fun adventures including his first haircut that are certainly worth revisiting!

I hope you have a few Circus Days this week, friends!

The day the computer said, "No."

You will not believe it.

I didn't.

I still don't want to.

My desktop computer has a virus and is in lock down until my bro can come over and fix it for me.

Newbie's first birthday pictures are on that computer.

I know.

Ugh.

I have an online file of back-up pictures, but since I struggle in the technology department (that's the understatement of the century), I'm not sure how to snag them from there and put them here.

So...

the Big Birthday Post is in the making...just not made yet. =/

Boo!

But I did happen to upload this little shot of my boys post-party last night before the computer started falling apart.

They were catching the end of the game, and boy, were they whooped.  Newbie was still recovering from his sugar buzz, and the Hubs was still recovering from his week with a crazy house-staging, party-planning wife.

I'm not gonna say we didn't need a little detox time after such a busy week...because we did.

So detox we did...we had a nice relaxing day today after such a busy busy week, and I happened to punch out a few Snapfish photo books in time to take advantage of their buy one get two free deal.  Good times were had by all. =)

I hope you all have had a blessed weekend...be back with birthday pics one of these days.  In the mean time, I'm going to console myself with leftover circus peanuts.  It just feels like a good plan right now.

Sugar crash, anyone?

Newbie had a blast at his birthday party today!  It was so special to celebrate with some family and friends. I can't wait to share the pictures with y'all!

While there are TONS of photos to come, I'm currently working my way through a pretty intense circus peanut overload over here....so  I'll be back with the pictures as soon as I recover!

Happy weekending!

His FIRST Birthday!!!

Happy Birthday, Newbie!!!

We woke up to one [SO BIG!] birthday boy today, and we have big plans to celebrate with him all day long!

He's had four birthday phone calls this morning (one birthday song sung by 32 fourth graders in G-Mama's class!), a pile of presents from Texas to open, a birthday rubber ducky hanging out on his highchair, and his first taste of a blueberry birthday waffle....this big boy knows that something's up and that today is a celebration!

After a birthday breakfast, we opened a slew of presents from his Mutte and Great Grandad and from the Hubs and me.  Newbie started dancing when he heard the song his new zebra sings, and he squealed when he saw the fun clothes his Mutte and GD sent (you've got great taste, Mutte!  I LOVE the outfits!)  His mama cried when she heard Mutte's voice reading On the Night You Were Born  to her sweet boy (shout-out to the genius who invented Hallmark's recordable story books...) and Newbie has been dancing in his new Stride Rite (Step 3!) kicks all morning.

Newbie and Opie had a hayday in the birthday aftermath...

...and now they're both crashed for a snoozer before the birthday shenanigans take the form of lunch out on the town and baby's FIRST HAIRCUT!

Check out this morning hair- it is time for a trim!

I am soaking in every moment of this day with my baby boy, and my heart is so full I could bust.

I spent a good amount of time this week reminiscing and crying at the realization that babies grow up and that there's nothing we can do to stop them...that the first birthday is just practice in letting them go and entrusting them to the Lord as they grow and sprout up into big boys and girls and then into adults someday.

Last night I cried happy tears as we waved goodbye to Newbie's first year, and this morning we're bursting with excitment and joy to be plunging into another blessed year with our little man!  I'll always look back and remember how sweet and fresh and pink he was those first months, but no more tears over how sweet and precious that time was because don't look now, its time to start another year of making memories!

Praising the Lord today for sweet blessings that come in small packages and grow bigger and bigger with each passing year!

Happy Birthday, Newbie!!!  We love you SO much!

A HUGE thank you to all of you who were there with us on that day, celebrating in thoughts, and prayers, and blog stalking(!).  We consider it such a blessing to have so many of you smiling with us as we watch our sweet boy grow up!

I dug into the archives to bring you this link, written a week after Newbie's birth day, where you can read about what we were doing on the day Newbie was born this time last year. =)

Have a happy Thursday!

Would you like some toilet paper with that rootbeer?

Sorry about the sappy Dear Diary post yesterday....I just couldn't help myself- the nostalgia is setting in, and the lump in my throat has made an appearance more than once or twice in the past 48 hours.

However, today I come to you with tidings of nothing sentimental.

Instead, I will share a lesson I learned the hard way, which is how I learn most lessons because I seem to think its more fun that way....or something.

It goes like this: Never decide to paint your bathroom orange.  Just don't do it.

And especially don't decide to do it a few days before your realtor sends a photographer over to take pictures that will be posted on the Internet for potential home buyers to see.

BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE CRAZY!

But, crazy is what we're good at around here.

And so, it happened.

Thaaaaaat's right.

Let me break it down for you:

On a whim last weekend I decided it would be a brilliant idea to paint one wall in my chocolate brown bathroom and bright and happy poppy field orange.

Yes, ORANGE.

I wanted something happy and fun and who-cares-because-we're-about-to-sell-this-place-anyway-and-why-not-have-a-little-mid-life-crisis-in-the-bathroom-wall-color-department?!

I know, I'm a genius.

When I finished last Saturday night, I was so proud.  So very, very proud of my happy, brilliant orange accent wall in my chocolate brown bathroom.

Until my sister came over on Sunday and said it looked like someone should be serving A&W rootbeer floats in there instead of using the toilet.

(You have to love the straight-shooters in your life who just tell it like it is.)

It appeared I had created an A&W Rootbeer joint in my own half bath.

If only that were true and I really could have rootbeer floats and french fries at my disposal, I might have let it go.

But alas, it was not true.  The only truth to it was that the color was heinous and it would undoubtedly repel any potential home buyers.

And so, 48 hours before our photographer was to be at the door, I grabbed a brush and a bad attitude and went about the task of painting over a ridiculously orange wall with a calm and quiet dark chocolate brown.

All was well again until the paint dried, and I realized late last night that there are little specks of orange scattered throughout the wall.

And that's when, after officially having painted the wall twice, and being on a deadline with our realtor, I decided, TOO BAD!  It will just be a little game guests can play when they're hanging out in our downstairs bathroom....hmm....how many remnants of our A&W can you find?!  Or like a little Easter egg hunt year-round in the water closet or a "Where's Waldo" party on the wall.

Fabulous.

And that, my friends, is why insanity and rootbeer and deadlines and bright orange and first birthday parties and real estate don't mix.

Aren't you glad you stopped by for that pearl of wisdom?

Me too.

In other news, the Hubs has today and tomorrow off, and we are living it up, baby.

Today we took Opie to the dog park, then hit up the gardens for a little sunburn, then came home to work in the flower beds and clean out the garage.  Tonight it's party planning and movie night and we might even toss in some grocery shopping if we decide we'd rather eat food than cardboard for dinner.

Yessiree, big day around here, BIG DAY.

I might be MIA the next few days due to a certain someone's FIRST BIRTHDAY and all the presents and surprises and goodies we have planned, but I'll be back with pictures and stories galore soon!

Wishing you all a wonderful Wednesday and fabulous bathroom decor that isn't edging on 50's diner appeal!

What I know full well

I'm warning you right now, I just read through this post, and it is one heck of a sentimental ride, so if you are under 52 inches tall in the sentimental department, you might want to get out of line now...I will be back later with more normal posts about my laundry and love of Lucky Charms.

The rest of you: buckle up and enjoy the ride! =)

In just two short days, my baby boy is going to be one year old.

One. year. old.

In the midst of the whirlwind that is planning for a birthday party and trying to get our house picture-ready for the housing market all in the same week, I find myself pausing.

Pausing because I never want to forget what life felt like a year ago

I never want to forget what it felt like to hold a life inside of me, a little one being knit together by the Father's hands before we ever saw his face.  I never want to forget the miracle that was carrying life and knowing God loved my son before my son ever even stepped foot in this world.  I never want to forget the feelings of anticipation and peace and joy that came with knowing there were just days separating me from seeing my baby face to face for the first time.  I never want to forget the hustle and bustle of preparing our "nest" so it would be ready to welcome our sweet gift home.

This week, the memories have come back in waves, flooding me with feelings and emotions and sights and smells, and then pulling back out to sea with the busyness of the day.  Hours, minutes, moments later, the tide comes in again and overwhelms my senses with another precious memory of that season of newness a year ago.

I remember the moment my son was born, and what it felt like to hold his sweet self against my chest, fresh as a new day and quiet as a mouse, he nuzzled up against me like he'd always known I was his mama even though he'd only just met me.  I remember looking over at the Hubs after hearing the nurses call for someone to bring him some orange juice and crackers and telling him, "Honey, please don't pass out on me today.  We just had a baby.  You can't pass out today." And all the while thinking...wasn't I the one who should be getting the OJ and crackers?!  I remember laughing with joy because good grief, who knew how wonderful and beautiful and overwhelming this would be for all of us!

I remember my heart breaking when the nurses told me that Newbie's heart rate was too high, and then I remember my heart rejoicing when they took him from my chest, checked his vitals, and sent the NICU team they had on-call in our room on their merry way, leaving my sweet boy behind with me.  I remember crying and my heart filling with pleas for healing when they set him on the examination table after the NICU team left and said his respiratory rate was still too high and they would need to monitor him.  I remember I kept asking questions they wouldn't answer and I remember turning my panic into unceasing prayer in the delivery room.

I remember that day feeling like eternity when the numbers of the respiratory count didn't go down.  After the bustle of visitors left and the Hubs and I were left alone with our sweet boy, I remember holding him and hugging him and marveling over the miracle that was our new baby.  I remember ignoring the numbers and just drinking in my baby, alone for the first time in the quiet of that evening.

I remember bawling when the Hubs followed the nurse out of our room that night to feed Newbie with a feeding tube because his numbers were still too high to nurse. I remember crying when the third doctor came in late that evening and finally said they needed to take him to the intermediate NICU.  I begged the Hubs to go with him so he wouldn't be alone, and called my mom and just sobbed and sobbed into the phone because my baby was sick and I wanted him to be with me, not stuffed away in another room in the hospital without us.  Again my panic turned into unceasing prayer through the night for my sweet baby, and was joined by the prayers of wonderful family and friends as we waited to find out what the next day would bring.

I remember the newness of the next morning and the glory of God revealed when we heard the fantastic news that our sweet boy was breathing at a normal rate and could come back to our room later that day, and most certainly would be well enough to go home with us the following morning.  I have never felt the peace and presence of the Lord more fully than through the long hours of that evening Newbie spent in the INICU, and I have never felt the overwhelming awe of the Lord's goodness more than that bright sunny day when the doctors told us he was better.

I remember taking in more details once my heart was settled and my baby was better that afternoon.  The light, fresh smell of the hand sanitizer set on the wall by the door to our room. The amazing menu of room-service food that I was too excited and anxious to eat, but happy to see was readily available. The faces of family and friends who stopped in to visit. The squeak of nurses shoes and the haze of their faces floating over mine, taking my temperature and checking my vitals while I drifted in and out of sleep.  The windowsill lined with flowers and cards and baby gifts as worship music played softly from the radio perched near the edge. It is all there, as if it was yesterday...

I remember the sweet coos and rustling of my baby boy, swaddled in warm white hospital blankets, lying in the bassinet next to my bed the first night he was allowed to stay with us in the hospital.  I remember the butterflies of excitement and worry and concern that fluttered any time I heard him make a peep by my side.  Three long hospital nights with barely two hours of sleep each float through my mind, and I remember what it was like to be sustained only by the grace of God and family while I gave birth and the Hubs and I cared for a brand new baby running on so few hours of rest.

After the storm of memories of Newbie's up-and-downs in the hospital, I smile when I remember what it was like to finally have him home.  To walk in the doors, entirely exhausted, and to swaddle him up and share our home with him.  To crawl into bed and continuously slip one eyelid open to peek on him sleeping in the bassinet next to me. I laugh when I remember those sleepless nights at home, when we would stumble from our room to the nursery, murmuring words of encouragement to each other as we performed another diaper change and then another, usually both before we even picked him up off the changing table. The best memory being when the Hubs was so tired that he zipped an extra fresh diaper up into the legs of Newbie's sleeper after a late night diaper change, which I didn't discover until the next morning, when I chuckled to myself because oh my goodness, what a lack of sleep will do to a soul!

I remember snuggling down in the rocking chair, in a haze of exhaustion, holding that sweet boy and nursing him, listening to his newborn sounds and stroking the feathery blonde hair at the nape of his neck, knowing that it was no small thing that he was so fresh and new, coming to us straight from the hands of our Creator.

In the same moment, I remember long nights and days trying to get the hang of nursing while at the same time maintaining my sanity.  I remember marking dirty and wet diapers and timing feedings and crying when I couldn't understand how on earth some of my friends had done this for several months on end.  I remember taking it minute by minute, feeding by feeding, until one day, out of nowhere, Newbie finally decided to come to the party and confirmed what all my friends had told me about how easy and quick and wonderful nursing can be if you just tough it out until you both get the hang of it.  I remember laughing because before I had a baby, talking about nursing gave me the willies and nursing a baby when there were other people around seemed so taboo, and then BAM! there I was, rocking the nursing apron and the breast milk like nobody's business.

I remember what it was like to finally begin to come out of that newborn fog...to have a few more hours of sleep at night and to let some things go because our baby was getting bigger and less fragile by the day.  To at the same time, stop letting some things go- like the enormous amount of stuff that had accumulated in the corners of my home while the Hubs and I were busy taking care of our new charge.

I remember weeks later finally beginning to see and register the faces of our visitors, when before they had been sweet hearts journeying to our home with warm dinners and hugs and cuddles for our little boy, but still faces that swooped in and out like a dream because I was just too tired to be anything close to a gracious hostess or good company.  Suddenly they were friends and grandparents and aunts and uncles and we were so happy to have them there to celebrate with us. I remember being happy because we finally felt like making our own dinner and getting out to go for walks and taking in more than just the fresh air, but the sights and sounds around us as we pushed our little man in the stroller.

I remember drenching our hands and the hands of our visitors in sanitizer and my mom gifting me a Costco gallon of the stuff as a result.  I remember taking each binky that fell to the floor through a vigorous disinfecting regimen before giving it back to Newbie.  I remember freaking out over each and every single thing because I am a rule follower, and if there was ever a time to follow rules, it was when there was a newborn in the house.

I also remember when I decided to stop wiping off binkies that fell to the floor.

I remember feeling like I was camping out on the border of crazytown for several months after I thought I had begun to come out of the fog, and I remember when I decided it was time to just step in and take up residency because children make you crazy, and that is, quite frankly, half the fun.

And that's the moral of the story: children make you crazy, and that is half the fun. Having the opportunity to learn where I am vulnerable as a parent and where I need to ask God to fill in the gaps has been the biggest challenge and delight of my journey in motherhood thus far. As the waves of memories crash on the shore of my mind, I remember realizing several times throughout this past year that no matter how much I try to care for my sweet boy and keep him from harm, God is the only one in true control, and my baby is more God's child than mine anyway.  This would be terribly frightening, if it weren't for the truth that God loves my sweet baby more than I could ever imagine, and He has a plan and purpose for Him far beyond what I can see. I remember how peaceful and reassuring that truth felt when I let it saturate my being and when I surrendered my little man over to the Lord, where he really belonged in the first place. It was several times throughout my pregnancy and then that first morning in the hospital when things were so scary that I first acknowledged my surrender of Newbie over to God, and just about every morning since then has been a surrender as well, to tell you the truth.

As the waves of memories ebb and flow throughout this week, I'm recognizing a constant theme of God's goodness and sustaining grace.  His peace and love and sovereignty are woven throughout those first days with my son and continue to intertwine throughout the story of his first year.  Motherhood has been for me, a constant laying down of my plans for Newbie and a constant surrendering of them over to the Lord.  I am overwhelmed with gratitude and praise for God, who despite my failures, loves me and my family with an abundant love that flows over and calms all the fears and trepidations that come with raising one of His children.  I feel so blessed to be entrusted with Newbie as my son, and so grateful to God for leading us each step of the way.

So this week, I'm allowing myself to get lost in the sea of memories of the past twelve months, and savoring every last one of them, then handing them back to the Lord and saying, "Thank you.  Thank you for gifting me with this sweet boy and for allowing me the honor and great joy of being his mother."

Then, we are rocking this boat and celebrating!

We are going to celebrate each memory that's swelled in my mind: each month, week, day, and moment of Newbie's first year as a part of our family. We are going to eat cotton candy and birthday cake, drink soda pop and lemonade, and be merry for God is so, so good and His works are wonderful, we know that full well!

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
Psalm 139: 13-14

It's birthday week around here friends, and we're about to get this party started! =)

Baby's First Ballgame

Take me out to the ballgame

Take me out to the crowd

Buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks

I don't care if I ever get back

For its root! root! root! for the home team

If they don't win its a shame

For its one, two, three strikes, you're out

At the old ball game!

We had a BlAsT at the baseball game yesterday.  Newbie was totally into it, and kept waving at the fans around us and googley-eyeing the mascots that must have looked like some of his stuffed animals come to life. The day was blazing hot, (80 degrees- praise the Lord! Just what we needed after a long too-cold winter.)  causing Newbie to squawk and kick those happy little legs so enthusiastically when he saw his Daddy-O and Mama sharing a Lemon Chill that he got a fair share himself.  We're talking "the souvenir shop sold out of baby sunscreen" kind of hot here, folks. It. was. awesome.

As if the beautiful weather wasn't enough, I was in hog heaven because I LOVE a good ball game.  The sounds, the smells, the sights.  I played softball for 10 years, and there's just something about being back at the field that brings on a flood of great memories and a love of the game.

The Hubs, of course, is also an avid fan, having played baseball through his sophomore year in high school and having a general love for every sport known to man as long as it doesn't involve somersaults or pom-poms.

He was so jazzed about taking us to the game.  We were all decked out in our baseball best and had a spread of hotdogs and beans with Aunt Corndog and Uncle J before leaving for the diamond. When we got there, it was all popcorn and cotton candy and lemon chills and beverages that cost an arm and a leg, but ya just gotta do it because you're at the BALL GAME.

We even bought a soft baseball for Newbie at the souvenir shop.

Oh yes, we went ALL OUT.  That was three dollars well spent until he dropped it into a puddle of someone's melted snowcone.  I remember getting the same soft baseball from the same shop when I was a kid, and it was such a joy to share the fun with my son.  I was on cloud nine.  And so was the Hubs, because at three o'clock, when Newbie had fallen asleep against my chest in the baby carrier and it was bottom of the fifth with two ducks on the pond, and the crowd was cheering and the sun was shining and the cotton candy was a' flowing, the Hubs looked over at me and said, "This is just perfect.  PERFECT."

Because I suppose as a husband and daddy, it doesn't get much better than sharing your joy in a bit of Americana on a Sunday afternoon at the baseball field with the two people you pour your life into leading and loving.

And share we did.  We drank up the day and made some memories.

And it was good.

When we got home, we spent the evening on the porch, soaking in the heat of the day and watching Newbie toddle around his water table in his dido.

As I tucked Newbie into bed last night, my heart was so full of good memories and gratefulness it could have burst.  I am so thankful for days God fills with joy and goodness, wraps up and then ties with a bow.

Hoping you have a day tied up with a bow this week, friends!
